How GTA 6 plays

Rockstar has said little about mechanics directly. What we know comes from the trailers, An Extended Look, the Game Informer cover story and store listings. Every point below says which, so you can judge it for yourself. We only use official material.

The big picture

  • Two protagonists

    You play as both Jason and Lucia. Lucia is the series' first voiced female lead.

    Rockstar's pre-order announcement calls GTA VI a single player experience. Nothing has been said about a new GTA Online.

Hurricane season

Rockstar told Game Informer it built a weather system for Florida's rough side: dynamic wind, tropical storms and full hurricanes, with rain pouring off rooftops and lightning across the clouds. Leonida is also home to more than 170 animal species on land, at sea and in the air. Reported

On the road

  • Wear and weather

    Cars carry rust, mud, dust and rain droplets, and traffic shows up with dents already in it.

    Dashboards have working gauges and touchscreens, with far more detailed steering wheels, doors and seats than GTA V.

    The same model appears with different grilles, wheels and body kits, and Leonida's traffic includes hi-risers, lowriders and underglow builds.

    Theft is more involved than in past games, with more ways for a steal to go wrong.

  • Personal touches

    Guns take custom engravings, tints and liveries. The Ultimate Edition revolver comes engraved for each protagonist.
